Understanding the New 7-Star Energy Rating Requirement

By ESD Consultants Team

The transition to a 7-star minimum energy rating represents the biggest change to residential energy efficiency in over a decade. We connect you with accredited ESD consultants who help you navigate this change and achieve compliance cost-effectively.

What Changed?

Under the National Construction Code 2022, all new residential buildings must achieve a minimum 7-star NatHERS energy rating — up from the previous 6-star requirement. This applies across all states and territories, though some jurisdictions have additional requirements on top of this.

What Does 7 Stars Actually Mean?

The NatHERS star rating measures how much energy your home needs for heating and cooling to maintain comfortable temperatures. A 7-star home uses significantly less energy than a 6-star home, which translates directly to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.

How to Achieve Compliance

Working with an accredited NatHERS assessor early in your design process is the most cost-effective approach. They can identify design modifications that improve your rating before construction begins, avoiding costly retrofits later.
