Section J Compliance: What Every Commercial Builder Needs to Know

By ESD Consultants Team

Section J of the National Construction Code (NCC) governs energy efficiency requirements for all commercial buildings in Australia. Understanding these requirements early in your project saves time and money.

What Does Section J Cover?

Section J addresses building fabric (walls, roof, floor insulation and glazing), building sealing (air leakage), air-conditioning and ventilation systems, artificial lighting and power, hot water supply, and access for maintenance of services.

DTS vs JV3 Compliance

There are two pathways to Section J compliance: Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) solutions follow prescriptive requirements exactly, while JV3 (Verification Method) uses energy modelling to demonstrate equivalent or better performance with alternative designs.

When to Choose JV3

JV3 assessments are ideal when your design uses extensive glazing, innovative building materials, or when DTS compliance would be prohibitively expensive. A JV3 assessment can often demonstrate compliance while maintaining your design vision.
